Understanding Data Governance
What data governance actually means inside a working team — beyond the policy documents.
Data governance often gets framed as a compliance exercise. In practice it's the set of habits that make sure the right people can find, trust and use the right data.
Ownership
Every important dataset has a named owner. They decide who can access it, what quality means, and when it should be retired.
Quality
Define quality in plain English — completeness, freshness, accuracy — and measure it routinely. Surface the score next to the data, not in a separate dashboard.
Access
Default to least privilege. Use roles, not individuals. Review access quarterly.
Lineage
Document how a number is produced — from source system to final report. When the number changes, lineage is what lets you diagnose why in minutes instead of days.
Privacy
Map personal data, classify it, and minimise where possible. Privacy by design is cheaper than privacy retrofitted.
